It’s hard to believe – Mulberry school, a once upon a time dusty, cracked pre-historic excuse of a building is now a state-of-the-art modern attraction which other schools can only dream of having!

A typical school day back in 2001 would include coming in through the crowded front gates (risking being crushed or else severely injured by a stray school bag) into your tutor room for registration.  If not in one of the draughty huts, home of spiders and other creepy-crawlies, then it was through the tube like corridors (another healthy crush) into a classroom.  Home sweet home.  Finding a chair with all four legs was the next challenge and following the number one rule of the old Mulberry School – ‘never put your fingers under the tables.’  It was a common experience, accidentally coming across a wonderful, rainbow coloured sticky mass of gum!  Yuck!

To name the problems of the old school would probably take up the length of this newspaper, but there’s no need anymore!  With our new Mulberry, all the classrooms are twice the original size, carpeted and fully equipped!  We now have Smart Boards in various classrooms, air conditioning in the classrooms, cleaner toilets – (let’s hope they stay that way) and the staff have luxury staff rooms!  We can also enjoy mother nature in the beautiful gardens with fountains and logs.  The two years of damaged eardrums from drilling was well worth it!

Here are a few teachers’ comments on their first impressions of the stunning new building…

History - Mr O’Keeffe - my first impressions were how green and pleasant the courtyard was – a sharp contrast to the crowded, bleak areas the school had before.

Food Technology – Ms Woods  – a lovely environment, I love the plant areas.

Maths – Ms Gupta – I admire the gardens and it’s a relaxing environment to work in.

English – Ms Constantinou – Wow!  Fantastic!  Good changes!

Science – Ms Hussain – very pleased to see the amount of space…very nice science labs!  The staff restaurant has a calmer environment – less noisy!
