Multiple Intelligences Information

Professor Howard Gardner at
Harvard University in the USA was the first person
to put forward the idea that people can be 'clever'
in more ways than one that is that we have 'multiple
intelligences'.
Below are outlines of what
exactly they are called and how you can use your
understanding of what kind of intelligent you are
to help your learning.

Correct name:kinaesthetic intelligence
People with this type of intelligence enjoy learning
while they doing things or as they do things. They
are usually good at physical activities like sport
and dancing.
Tips for studying:
- It can help to have background music playing (but
remember not disturb others)
- Chewing gum while you are studying (you might not
be allowed to do this in class)
- Making models
- Flick through books to get a rough idea what they
contain before you read through them
- Learn things or think them through while you are
doing something physical - like running on the spot
or read while on an exercise bike

Correct name:Verbal/linguistic intelligence.
People with this type of intelligence tend to enjoy
working with language or languages. They usually like
writing and word games such as crosswords but also
learn by listening.
Tips for studying:
- Written notes - or even taped ones which you write
out -work well for you
- Build up vocabulary on a subject you are studying
- Brainstorm your ideas about an essay or project
before you begin
- You like talking about subjects so joining discussion
groups/ study groups

People with this type of intelligence generally learn
best through working alongside other people and enjoy
being part of a class or study group. They also like
learning about people.
Tips for studying:
- study support groups work well for you
- Talk to your teachers, friends and classmates discussing
the study subject with them
- Study where there are others around you - but try
not to be distracted

Correct name:Intrapersonal intelligence.
People who are this type of clever usually like studying
on their own. They are good at working out their own
study path and tend to be quite independant.
Tips for studying:
- Hopefully you will be able to find somewhere quiet
and where you can be by yourself to study
- Write a study diary, keeping a note on what you
think and feel about study topics
- When you are taking notes about a subject, again
add notes giving your thoughts and feelings about
the subject

Correct name: visual/spatial intelligence.
People with this type of intelligence usually learn
best through visual things. Usually they enjoy painting
or other form of art or craft. They enjoy expressing
their feelings through such activities. They also have
a good sense of distance and space .
Tips for studying:
- When taking notes, add in diagrams where you can
- Watch videos on a study subject
- Where possible, illustrate or draw things out to
get a sense of their meaning and to express your
own feelings
- If you have access to a camcorder, make a video
around a subject

Correct name: Musical/rhythmical
intelligence
People with this type of intelligence
tend to learn best through music. They enjoy rhythm
and sound. Often they can't help tapping a out rhythm
or hum along to music.
Tips for studying:
- Making up little songs to help you remember things
- Write music to help you in express your feelings
on a topic eg. interpreting a character's feelings
in literature
- If one of your classmates is making video, maybe
you can help do the music
- Play background music while you're studying (but
again be careful not to disturb others - classical
music like Mozart stimulates the brains processes)

Correct name: Logical/mathematical
intelligence
People with this type of intelligence
likes to: do experiments, work things out, work with
numbers, ask questions and explore patterns. They like
to organise the information so that it makes sense
to them, often using diagrams or charts. They are often
good at mathematics and science.
Tips for studying:
- When you can add diagrams and drawings to your
notes
- Plan out your studies and assignments
- Work out the patterns you find in other things
like languages and sports
- Make charts and diagrams to help you understand
and explain things
